A lot of things contribute to the smell. First, if they’re in an aquarium, ammonia can build up faster because there is no ventilation. Second, what kind of litter are you using? I find careFRESH cuts down on the smell a lot. You can also put a thin layer of baking soda underneath the litter. Also, check where the smell is coming from, because sometimes you can just change that part of the cage and the problem is solved. For example, my rat Betty, no matter how many times I lecture her, continues to pee in her bed. So I change her bed when it starts to smell, and the overall smell is gone.
