Hello i am about to get a new rat for my other one to play with he is a boy and i was planning on getting another boy. Should I?

Yes it’s good to get two of the same gender. That way they won’t reproduce. If you do want your rats to have babies you could get a female instead.

I had some pet rats a few years ago, then I had to move out of state. I have always wanted to get more. The ones I had before were tiny when I got them, and I had a male and female. As they matured, they seemed to need to be separated. The male looked like he was dominating the female way too much, and I feared for her safety. Why is this, and how can I successfully keep both sexes?

males and females will mate at 5 weeks of age. your rats were making babies. now that was irrisponsible wasnt it?

I was wondering if anybody knew wether or not it’s a good idea to put two un-neutered males together? feel free to e-mail me at rjmccrthy@yahoo.com, or just post it up.

yes, if they are littermates it won’t be a problem, however if they are unfamiliar with each other, its best to pair a baby male with an adult male rather than put two stranger adult males together. They will usually bond with each other in a few days, and there won’t be a power struggle if only one male is dominant.

i have two adult males at around 1 3/4 years old and i want to get two baby male rats (6 weeks old), i want the baby to live in with the current adult. would this be ok?

  8. imperiella said,

    on August 19th, 2006 at 9:42 pm

yeah, see my reply above. there is some stuff you should do when you introduce them, like use neutral ground, i.e. fresh bedding without scent on it, and either give them a bath with the same scented shampoo or rub perfume or vanilla extract on them so they smell alike, since they identify each other as family by scent. and moniter them in case a bad fight breaks out, it usually takes a few days for them to acclimate. I just introduced a baby male to my adult male, and they bonded after about a day and a half.

I have an un-neutured adult male rat. He seems bored even though I play with him frequently, so I’m planning on getting another adult male rat. I’m afraid to get a young male rat because I’ve heard horror stories about adult males killing younger males. Is it okay to get an adult male? Will the introduction be easier if I neuter both of them first? Thanks!

I got my first pet rat 3 days ago, he is 2 months old. The first couple of days,he was litter trained all on his own and seemed fine. The past couple of days, he has been sneezing and it looks bloody (i know its actually phosphyris) however, my problem is that im currently in between jobs and i simply just dont have enough money to take him to the vet… Do you know any home remedies for this or is there something i can do.. I feel so bad for my little baby

I have got my two male rats. but one of them has started sneezing consitantly, and he has turned very scared in his cage and is particualy scared of the bottom. I only have sawdust and shreded paper at the bottom and he has S.paper in his box at the top and it the only thing he likes. shall i take him to the vets about both things or just leave it and see what happens?
    please can someone help
    thanx

Hi, I’m concerned one of my male rats is a little chunkier than he should be! I let them out every day so that they can run around and they have free reign over the living room for about 3hrs a night, so exercise isn’t the most obvious answer to me.

Any tips on how to slim him down?

  15. Matt said,

    on October 10th, 2006 at 12:54 pm

To Angela, if your rats nose looks like its bleeding, we were told to place a towel over the cage and place a bowl with boiling water under it as well. You can put some Eucalyptus oil in it as well, basically the same as a person would do if they had a cold.

hi me again yeah my male rat has been displaying weird signs I dont know what to do? the other day he ran a round in circles and then he ran up and down the ramp whats wrong with him? can you help thanx

  19. Lauren said,

Chris, did you mate them on purpose? If you don’t want more babies, separate the male and female now. The female will have babies guaranteed at this point. Not sure on the exact gestation. A few weeks I think. Also once you see the babies are no longer nursing separate the males and females if you arn’t giving them away because they will also start breeding when they’re old enough. If you want a male and female in the same cage you need to have the male nuteured. It’s not fair for them. Same sex pairs usually get along better though esp if they’re litter mates.

Hi, I just got 2 female dumbo rats yesterday. (: I’ve read every single piece of rat information I could get my hands on, but I need some advice.

How do I start getting them to trust/let me hold them?

I read somewhere that you should wear two old shirts and place them inside your shirt and leave them there for 20 minutes, timing it. It also said to do this every day for about a week, and they’ll begin to trust and accept you.

Somewhere else said to handle them for a half hour every day, making sure you hold them a full half hour, no matter how much they dislike it.

So I was wondering, are these good techniques?

And if so, how long should I let them alone before I start handling them? Like I said, they’ve only been with me about a day now, I don’t want to stress them out.

Any comments/advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Mandeh,

I’m having the same problem with my new male rat. He was recued from a feeder cage and is terrified of being handled. If your two rats are babies you should have not problem. Handle them at least 30 min a day on your lap or petting them while they run around on the bed or something. (I used to let my do dumbo girls tunnel around in the sheets and they loved it, would crawl all over me too playing) For older rats that are not used to people i’ve found a good method is to sit in front of the cage (this works best if you have a side door) with the cage door open onto your lap. Have a spoon of some tasty treat that they have to lick off of the spoon (ei, yogurt, meat paste) that way they will hopefully climb out of the cage onto your lap and stay there while they eat the treat asociating the good food with being with you. You can just rest your hand on their back and have them get used to you at first then gradually work into petting and picking them up. You know they are not afraid of you if they will stay there and groom once they are done with the treat. Try to get them to stay one your lap at least 20 min a day.

PS: i live in Ne lincoln U.S.A and cant get them out of state

  23. Ellie said,

    on December 31st, 2006 at 10:01 pm

    Hi Bobby K,
The oldest they get is probably 2 1/2 yrs. The youngest can be any age.

If one dies, you should get another as soon as you can (same sex) and handle the 1 left as much as you can. For more info look here:

    http://fatratcentral.com/interacting-with-rats/introducing-rats/

Petsmart is a great place to get them! Also anything else you need. Petsmart, Pet world, or Pet Stuff are the stores you want.

For different types of rats, I would look up rat breeders on Google, also look on petfinder.com.

    Hope this helps!

I just got a rat yesterday and she keeps sneezing. There are no other symptoms. I’m not sure if her breathing is okay. I’ve never had a rat before, but when I hold her up to my ear, it sounds normal enough. Just sounds like breathing. But she will not stop sneezing. All of the sites I’ve been to said that I should give it about a week but I’m worried and I almost want to take her back so I wont have to see her die. That would make me sad.

Should I wait a bit or just go ahead and take her back?

  26. Phox said,

Hello. My rat currently..well she’s dead/dying in my lap at the moment and she keeps rolling in spirals and opening her mouth to make a soft ‘uh’ sound as if she couldn’t breath. Ever since we got her shes acted a little off but it’s never been anything as bad as this. We dont use pine or cedar bedding, we kept her diet constant with a nice blend and her water was changed regularly.

Is there anything else that might create hyperactivity within a rat (like she was last night around ten, climbing all over her cage a bit wildly) just for her to resovle into this..state?

I actualy have a question. I had a female rat before for almost 3 years and i want to get a new one, possibly two. I was wondering if i should get two females or two males? I heard that if you get two males, they will fight. So, my question is, should i get two males or two females?

I have started breeding my rats.
however, im not sure if they have actually mated yet…
so i put them in the same cage again, and whenever the male tries to “hop” on the female rat keep kicking him in the face, or attacking him etc…
    why is this?

post a reply or email me.

Maya, i have two males and two females, and they’re in seperate cages, they are all well behaved so i tyhink you should go with your gut on this.
even if the males DO fight, it means that they are fighting for the alpha rat.
    dont worry, they will stop.

My rat keeps snezzing, and snezzing, and snezzing. I feel really bad because my parents say its my fault. It has a spot on its back that is loosing hair, i think it constantly scratches it. What should i do??? My parents won’t let me take it to the vet, the think the vet cant do anything.

P.S. Hannah, I think you should play with it more untill it gets more used to you. Its only 1 day you’ve had it, and 8 weeks old!!! Keep playing with it every day, and dont freak out when it tickles you!!!!!

  56. Amy said,

    on March 19th, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Hannah- You need your rat to be used to you in the first 15 days, if you are

mean to it then, stop playing with it everyday for that time period, or scare it,

it will be either mean, or afraid of you IT’S WHOLE LIFE!!!!!!!

Make sure that you are the only person playing with it, or you are the main

person to play with it, it is very crusial. (Can you say that????? just kidding)
