I have an albino rattie (Caber) and she tends to sway her head like crazy back and forth. I read someone that most ratties have bad eye sight, and albino's eye sight is even worse, because they are more sensitive to light or something, and that they sway like that to get an idea of how far away something or someone is. Is this accurate or should I visit a vet and get Cabers ears checked for an infection? Any information is helpful, thanks

I am 14 and I have had rats since I was seven. I thought that there was something wrong with the rat when it swayed it's head but there isn't. Rats, escpeially albino, do have bad eyesight, At this moment I have 21 rats and all of them sway their head. If they satart tilting their head and sort'of stagger in a way, when they walk then it may be an ear infection. Other than that you have noting to worry about.

Well, a male tends to have less helth problems, and they way less tumors. They do , however, tend to mark there terrotory way more than females and are a lot bigger. They are a lot less active. you have to choose: do you want a rat to play with you, or sit on your lap. Female rats have the joy of both. They will play with you 'till there older then they slow down and will even watch tv with you!
Females almost always get toumors. But they are smaller, and smell better. It is a hard choise. Both are very sweet and smart. But in answer to your question, males have less health problems.

Help is needed here. I've been having rats during 7 last years, cannot find the answer- why does my rat itches always? I clean the case twice a week, feed it well, do everything I can, but it won't stop itching and having bleeding injuries around its head. Pet doctor checked and found no skin infection. The poor rat always wants to be scratched... What can be probably wrong?

Every once and a while my boys start that itching mess and I give them a three week treatment of Ivermectin and usually that does the trick. Or he might just have too much protein in his diet. Read this link:

http://www.ratballs.com/RatTails/Tails085.html

The woman who owns the site is a great person and a friend of mine. She's been a lifesaver to me and my boys. You can get the Ivermectin at your local petstore or online. It's a horse wormer so pay close attention to only give it in the dosage recommended on the site above! Good luck!

Hello
I have just discovered that my rat is bleeding out of her vaginal area. We do not know why and so far what ive researched is either a uterine tumor, genital mycoplasmosis, or urinary tract infections are what cause this. My rats (2) are 7.00 fancy rats from Petsmart and i have had them for over a year and a half. I love them so much but my parents are reluctant to take her to the vet because the bill will probably cost more than ive spent on her total. I would really like to find out more about symptoms (she acts normal and isnt tender, so far, around her lower regions or anywhere else) and treatment. Thank you.

Hi, I'm Kate and I've had my rat for a year and a bit now. But today I notices she had like a rash on her back like above the legs, it looks sore and red. I thought it might be biets or where she's scratched her skin, but I don't know what to do :/

Hello, I've had rats since I was five and so far have had 9 (including the 2 i have at the moment). One of my rats has just begun to grow a tumour. I was wondering what the average life span is for rats. Mine don't seem to live much over 2 years. Is there anything I can do to lengthen their life span?

heyy ive had a couple rats now and have seen most of these problems.. if your rat is having labored breathing and isnt eating, she is probably goin to die soon. this is the advanced stage of microplasma and at this point there is very little you can do except make her last bit of life comfertable. . .

I need help. My rat (nowell ) is not brething to well. He seems to stay in one spot. I heard that a worm can do it but I am not sure. I cannot take him to the vet right away though because I just moved and I dont know of any reasonable and knowledgeable vet in this area. I have looked almost every web site I can find to find something to help him. I have heard of pnemonia in rats and should I keep him away from his brothers?? If he leaves I dont want him to be like all alone :(. It seems a little inhumane can someone help me ??? Also he is skinny and will only eat something if I chew it up and give it to him (( I know sounds nasty but it is true )) could that make him worse?? I sort of figured eatting something like that is better then eatting and drinking nothing at all. I heard albertol might help and I have been sharing my medicine with him. I try to vacum at least twice a day now, but I dont know how to make him any better. I am trying to be optomistic about this but I am very worried for him. Someone anyone help???

I just got two rats today from a pet shop because we couldn't find any breeders. I wanted two boys so I desided I was gonna get the all black and all white one. When the girl got it out of the cage she said the black was a boy and the white she wasn't sure. It looks so much like a boy because when it lays down it looks like it has testicals, but when it's lifted up it dosen't look like he has any. And I really thought it was a boy so we got it. But the white is pretty active while the black is really lazy but in the pet shop the white was more lazier. And allso the white has softer fluffier fur. So I want to know do you think the white is a boy or a girl. Allso, my white has been iwitching his eye sometimes, he's albino so could him being albino have any thing to do with it or is their something wrong with his eye?

Hey, I bought two new rats in August, mistaking one for a boy and they had a litter of 11 babies. I've decided to keep 2 of the babies so i can separate them all. The thing is, Ive noticed my precious baby girl I kept looks rather fat. I was worried that it might be tumors but she's soft all around, so im praying it's just fat. Of all the babies she was the smallest, and they all live, but she's the only one who looks like this. Ive read about tumors and it doesnt sound like she has one. She eats, drinks, sleeps, walks around.

So is my lil baby just fat or should i worry?=(

Hey,
I have an albino rat named Rocky. She has a bulgy eye that has gone from pink to white back to pink now to yellow and right now it has dried blood on it. Does anyone know what this means? She is still very active and eats well. Please, any info would be greatly appreciated!

I bought 2 rats 2 days ago (8weeks old) and one is breathing really quickly (panting). She is eating but looks very unwell, she has been sitting still for long periods of time with her eyes half shut. What could be wrong with her? Is there anything I can do? Should I remove her from the other rat?

My pet rat has a whole bunch of it almost looks just like open wounds on her stomach, underneath her arms, and legs.

I did some research and I thought it was from an unclean cage, so i kept an unkeep cage. Didnt help.

I've been feeding her these peanut based treats and i read that too much protein can cause skin problems. Its been 3 weeks since i've fed her those, and she keeps getting worse.

I've clipped her toenails really short so she doesnt itch her skin away and ive been putting neosporin on her wounds so that they heal.

Before i take her to the vet is there any unformation that I could use that could be helpful! PLEASE!

a reply would be great.

thank you!

Hi, I bought 2 baby female rats at my local pet store, that are both about 2 to 2 1/2 months old now. They were sneezing as soon as I got them home. I took them to the vet, and he gave me some Baytril to give them. That really didn't seem to help much. In fact, one of them (Sophia) is now making a strange sort of squeaking noise everytime she sneezes. The other (Penelope) is still sneezing, but not making the weird sound. I went back to the vet, and he gave me doxicyclen to try. They still aren't any better. Both are pretty active otherwise.. Penelope more so than Sophia though. I was just wondering if I should keep trying different anti-biotics, or is it just something that is normal for them? I am expecially worried about Sophia though.. the sounds she make don't sound very good.
Any advice would be great!
PS: I use Carefresh bedding so it shouldn't be bothering their lungs.

when i let my rats out they always sneek out and go under couches and our big tv and it takes ages to get them back. There is lots of wires and we have to watch at every moment to get them back in but they never go.--

I find it helpful to catch my rats, give them a treat, and let them go again before I want to put them away. This way they don't think that every time I try to catch them I will put them back into their cage.

i have a male rat just over a year old. i'm pretty sure he has a small chunk of food lodged in his nasal passage. when he breathes it sounds like he's whistling. i don't think he's sick, because he doesn't sneeze anymore than usual. he's eating normally and even playing. he does, however, paw at his face as if he's trying to dislodge whatever is in there. i have tried rubbing along the top of his nose to try to help it along, and as much as he enjoys it, it doesn't seem to help. the pet store said that there isn't any type of nasal flush for rats, and i don't have the money right now to take him to the vet. has anyone ever had this problem before? i do not think he's in any pain. it seems to be more of a nuisance than anything. i am concerned that he's been this way for 2 or 3 days now. i'm afraid if i don't get it out it could cause an infection or even depression. please help!

I have a male rat that is sneezing a lot and it sounds wet. I have ordered some tetracycline and I am wondering what the dosage should be. He is still a baby, so if anyone has that information I would greatly appreciate, and I know Templeton (aka "T") would love it as well! Thanks!

Today I held my new rat, Muffin, and she was a lot lighter than usual. Last time this happened my rat, Susan, died. Is there anyway of knowing what this problem is and how to solve it? I know my rat is eating (she gets her 3 pellets a day plus 2 or 3 treats (yogies) a day) because her cage never has any remains of food, neither does the floor. What can I do?

Also my rat is completely fine otherwise. Her eyes are clear and shiny. They aren't swollen or red. Her nose is clean and normal. She has no lumps or bumps. Her ears aren't red. It looks like she is thinning in this one spot near her bum but I think it because she is a neat freak (she cleans herself and her friend at least 10 times a day). Also Maple, her friend, got her toe stuck in the side of the cage and pulled it out during her WILD panic. It's swollen and a little deformed but otherwise she is as adventurous as always. Should we be worried about any infections, there is a small cut but it looks just fine, or any other problems? Thanks!

Our pet rat has lost the end of her tail. It is bleeding a little bit. not sure how it happened. we do have cats or if she (the rat) did it somehow. What do we do to treat the minor bleeding and will she be okay?

My darling baby Roxy has a lump on her neck, which wasn't there yesterday. Of course, I immediately thought it was a tumor, but my mom seems to think that its just food. But I am almost positive that only kangaroo and Pouch rats have cheek pouches. Roxy is just your everyday, albino rat, and i just want to know what is wrong with her...

"We have separate female and male cages. We bred our first male with 2 females (not related). We kept 2 babies and the rest of the two litters went to a very good pet shop. We visited at least every other day, but they were bought within a week. Then we bred the youngest male with his mother. That's the litter that we lost 2 pups. I dont know if it was because of the inbreeding, but we were told it would be ok.

Speedy (our sick rat) is 1 of the 2 survivors. When I went to take him out of the cage today, he was alert and greeted me like normal. He came right up and into my hand. I brought him into the bedroom and set him on the bed. He ran up to my husband like normal and played for 10 minutes while I walked our dogs. When I came back, I noticed he had hid under the blanket and when I went to play with him, I noticed his body was lifeless and he was breathing rapidly. He wouldnt respond to sound, pain or movement. Like he was in a come. Then we read about younger rats having heat strokes and his tail was really warm. So, we did the bath. He is also drinking Gatorade now.

If he had an infection, why did it hit him so hard and so quickly? Could he have had a stroke and we were too late to cool him off? Could the stroke have injured his lungs and that's the sound we're hearing. We really cant afford to take him to the vet. I am very worried and I dont want him to suffer. He seems to be improving slowly, but I dont know if he is in any pain. I just dont understand what would make his health deteriorate so quick like that."

i've had two rats from the same litter for a year and a half now, one of them is a healthy weight (izzy) whilst the other always used to steal food and was slightly overweight (hazel). i noticed yesterday morning that hazel had lost the ability to grasp her food and cant grip anything, and has starting to struggle to walk, but only slightly. she has no breathing problems and is still alert, when picked up she feels as light as a feather although no bones are showing. i was wondering if these are the symptoms of a stroke, or an illness, and if theres any chance of her making it through, of if this is the start of her old age deteriorating :( any suggestions would be nice as im unsure wether this is a need for the vet or simply to make her as comfortable as

HELP! I recently aquired five 2 month old babies that my friend of the humane society said were dropped off due to overcrowding at the owners home. They are fantastic babies, all with a sweet personality and so far are proving to be a beautiful addition to our family. However....one of the little guys, his name is Rocky, kinda leans to the side and does a weird sort of roll whenever I put him down and into his cage. I am not sure if I should take him to the vet or if some rats do this. My first group of 5 (they all passed away from old age) never exhibited this behavior so I am lost as what to do. I've read about the ear infection behavior on this site but he doesn't tilt his head so much as his whole body. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you...

Your website saved my girl "Sunny", she had alot of weird symtoms like head tilt, walking sideways, falling over. I thought she was gonna die and reading your website I thought she had a pituitary tumors(fatal) or something. I did some more research and reading on your website and come to find out I was feeding her crappy food where she would just pick out what she liked so she wasn't getting a balanced diet, so I started giving her what your site recommends "Kaytee Foti-Diet" and now she's all back to normal.

THANKS so much and keep up the good work on this awesome website!!!!!!

I am 14 and i've owned rats since two years ago. I was wandering if anyone would give me any ideas on what was wrong with my rat, Tissot. He was a male rat and he started loosing his fur and his eyes and nose were contantly oosing that porifin stuff and he started to be unable to walk or eat and I had to feed him liquids out of a siringe. I took him to the vet and i think they said it was a respitory infection but i'm unsure if that's what caused such a big problem. It was so upsetting to see him struggling to do the normal things that my other rat was doing, he couldn't climb the ramps or stairs and had to live on the bottom level of his cage because he was always falling down the levels of the cage. i moved everything that he needed, e.g. his food and water etc to the bottom level where he was living. he would just lie there in his cage unable to get up. all this was in the space of a week. He died during the night beside my only other rat. my remaining rat, Bando is still alive and he is quite old now. if you could give me a few ideas of what was wrong with Tissot then maybe i can try to prevent my other rat from becoming ill too.

My rat Edwina (Eddie for short) is fucked. I think she's dying, and I don't know what to do. She had a lump on her arm which turned out to be an infected scratch from her sister and the Vet put her on antibiotics for it. Now her face is all swolen and she's staggaring around. She has very little control over her body, she looks like she's drunk. It seems like it could be mycoplasmosis, but it happened so fast. Almost overnight. She has laboured breathing and drippy eyes. I think she also has a tumor behind her arm, but I don't have the money for X-rays and rat surgury. She doesnt have the dexterity to drink, so I hand fed her from a syringe and made a puree of her favourite foods. I seperated her form her sister just in case she has something contageous. Any idea as to what this could be? I noticed a lot of people asking and no too many answering but I shall try to be optimistic. Thanks.

HEllo I am a rat enthusiast. I have tried to give my precious pets the ideal environment and life in general but it seems they are prone to many different illnesses and reading these testimonies I see that I'm not the only one with problems. I had one die the other day for unknown reasons, she just got really sluggish and lost weight and at the end couldn't keep her balance. I did the humane thing and put her down. I now have three remaining and they seem to be infested with some skin parasite. One of the three, Jillian, my favorite, had the good luck of being spared from being snake food, but not before getting bit in the eye. She lost her eye and is doing fine without it but it's taking a long time to heal. I put antibiotic ointment on it periodically but it's not closing up. It's been a few months now. I'm more worried about their skin problem than anything. I would appreciate any advice on this matter. A word of encouragement to all you rodent lovers out there, it may be discouraging for your critter to suffer and meet an untimely end but I'm sure you have given them the best life possible. Don't forget either that they have naturally very short life spans, much shorter in the wild so while you do have them in your possesion keep that in mind and give them what they want the most, security, fun, a clean cage and FOOD!

I really enjoy all my pet rats. I have 5 total. I have just learned that my hairless rat nudels will only live about 1 year. that makes me sad.
But I will enjoy every minute of her precious life every single day!

Sarah, My rats have vomited then had dry heaves on occassion. They used to choke on their food, because they were fighting over it, and eating it too fast. I took each of them to our dog's vet on two separate occasions. I finally was smart enough to ask for the cannula, the thing they put down their throat to dislodge the stuck food. Then I could do it myself.

I lost one rat. Bandit was fighting over a piece of food with his brother Teebers. A piece split off and got stuck in his mouth. He yanked it out and in the process, yanked a tooth which I didn't realize at the time. A few days later, his face started swelling. I took him to a vet who specializes in exotic animals. $180 later (I know, I can't believe it either.), we lost him anyway. (It wasn't supposed to cost THAT much.) She knocked him out. Filed his teeth, and said that he was missing a tooth. Well, his prognosis stank, because they need all their teeth to file the opposing tooth down. She shouldn't have done anything after finding out he lost his tooth. She should have asked permission to put him down. He suffered for a week and a half before we took him to the Humane Society to put him down on July 3, and we lost all that money, which we can't really afford. How do you tell your daughter, "No." and not try?

Since we only have one rat now, there is no fighting over food anymore and no more choking. I hold this one more now, because he needs our company and loves to be held. If this one's face swells, he will be put down instead of wasting money on that vet and making him suffer. (I won't go to that vet again either.) He is 2 1/2 years old and had a good life. I would rather donate that kind of money somewhere useful.

Sarah, how is your rat?

PS This rat is special. He has no ear canal on his right side. It is amazing how well he hears. When we walk through the room, he runs up to the top level to be held. When I give him his food, sometimes he takes it downstairs and drops it and comes back up to be held instead of eating right away. He knows his food will be there when I put him back. HE REALLY IS SMART and lovable! The best thing is that he keeps my mother-in-law out of my house. She has only visited here 3 times in 2 1/2 years and lives 10 minutes away. That is the other reason I paid so much to try to save my rat. :>( She will never know when this one dies. He will "live" forever. :>D

I have aserious (I think) problem. I have 2 males - both are very sweet and affectionate - one is more dominant - from what I have read that is normal...Here is the problem: I got these two gents as pets for my 6 yr. olddaughter - and she loves them dearly- she takes excellent care in feeding/watering them daily. However today while I was attending to some chores I hear a bloodcudling scream...I thought perhaps one had bitten her - no. She brought the more submissive male to me and he was bleeding from the tip of his tail. Apparently she wanted to give him a "ride and was swinging him by his tail. I am so sad and have been upset since this happened. Originally I thought the tip had broken off - but it looks as though only the skin was removed from the last 1" of his tail. I called the vet and they said rats lose portions of their tails all of the time. He seems much more lathargic and squeeks (in pain I assume) every couple of hours...This is completely unnatural behaviour for him. The dominant rat is leaving him alone thankfully - even helps him to clean the wound every so often. But I would love to know if anyone has ever had a tail loss, and if so what is normal, what I can expaect, and if ultimately I should have him seen by the vet. thank you for any help you can offer. Please no criticism - she did not mean to cause harm (and up until now I had no reason to worry)- we love chompers and Buddy dearly, I just need any helpful hints you might have. Thank you DJ

Hi, I have a suggestion for anyone who has found their rat has sores on their back and chin without fleas or mites. (make sure you check for any little black bugs, etc.) My rat had this problem, and she had no mites or little bugs or anything. I clipped her nails with regular human fingernail clippers, (I wouldn't recommend human fingernail clippers with cats or dogs, though, and you can use pet clippers on your rats, too) the sores have seemed to heal. I also put some neosporin (antibacterial sore cream) with a q-tip. I don't know if that helped but I put it on there just in case. My rat's name is Rexie. She's a grey rex/dumbo. :)

I have a rat, who i named puppy for some strange reason, who has the biggest tumor that I have ever seen on a rat...She trips over it quite a bit, but other than that, she seems to be really active, even though she is about two and 1/2 years old. (yeah, i know pretty old rat.) I'm pretty positive that she has Mycoplasma as well....I'm having a rough time deciding if i should put her down or just let her stick it out. The reason I'm still at this fork in the road is because she is still very very active and seems pretty happy (despite the nuisance of a gigantic tumor.) Opinions?

It would be nice if someone that understand these illnesses would type a suggestion. This is very sad to read these symptoms and read no response. We all need to help each other out and get through the illness of our rats. If anyone has answers, please take five minutes out and help these individules. Thank you

I am disturbed to hear about folks who are reluctant to take their pets to the vet. If you cannot afford to humanely own an animal, you should not buy it. If you rat is suffering, you must take it to a vet immmediately, if anything, at least to have it euthanized (which is generally not very expensive).

to kat,

I know how you feel, our saskia went through the same thing, we had a tumer removed but it grew back very quickly. the question you should ask yourself is, does puppy have a good quality of life? is she eating ok? is she able to move without falling over?
this may seem abit harse but you must remember tumers are often uncomfortable and even though she may still be active at the moment how long will she stay active. once you have asked yourself thease questions then ask yourself what signs you are going to wait for untill you take her to the vet. sorry if this is upsetting for you.
i kept saskia going untill she couldent manage moving around without effort an eating was affected. in the end saskia was put down.

i just found this site and i enjoy it so far. i always tend to have an issue with the rats getting lice....i keep the cages clean and them clean with kitten lice shampoo. it's just the fact that every time there's baby rats lice is soon to follow. wasn't sure if it's just because they're young or what...but i always seem to have this issue. i've changed bedding and everything, more than once, and combined things...it'll eventually go away with the kitten shampoo, it's more of a nuisance when they're so young. guess this isn't so much of a question...BUT....if anyone else has issues with lice i suggest finding a kitten/cat shampoo that treats fleas, ticks, and lice. it works well and doesn't make them sick.

Hi
I have a pet rat he is a little over a year.
I have had problems cutting his claws..
He never bites me luckily but he moves around so much making it really hard to cut. Lately I have been putting really fine sandpaper in the cage ( secured so they cannot move/eat it ) But this has not been as working very well.. His claw is now bloody at the root and if I touch his foot he jumps. I have not been able to find a vet very willing to see a rat. So I'm up for any suggestions.

To samantha,

if his foot keeps bleeding dab a bit of flour on it as this helps to congille the blood.
I use chewing blocks and scratching stones that usualy helps to keep there claws down.
if you live in the u.s a list of vets available are on "the rat report sight" if not the rspca in the uk are willing to check any animal.

umm.. to everyone asking aboubt the sneezing, wheezing, coughing, gagging, wet nosed pet rats. im not for sure what it is or why but im pretty sure its basically just like rat asthma. keep smoke away and other harsh smells or fumes, and feed her 1/2 clove garlic everyday until they quit. promise you, it will work. and if they start having a really bad attack at any time, you can hold them about 3 to 4 inches from an albuetrol inhaler and spray it in the face kinda. it'll help them. or if u have like a breathing machine or nebulizer or can use that in short times and small doses, and make sure they breath in at this time too, lol, fresh air. anyway, it worked for my first pet rat, daisy and she's still here with me now. lol. ciao.

A couple days ago, I noticed what appeared to be an open cut or sore just above one of my rats' private area. I figured that it was caused by the other at when they fight. It seemed to be getting smaller after a day or so. I cleaned the wound with a disinfectant wipe so it wouldn't get infected. Two days or so after i initially noticed the sore, she seemed to be in pain at least for a few minutes before she tried to scurry off and explore as usual. The next day, i found both of my rats dead with blood coming out of the nose of the one with the sore. What could have caused this? I'd noticed them having bloody noses before but i figured it was porphyrin like this site says. They also had been sneezing alot when I first got them about 6 months ago, but figured it was mycoplasma. Thanks for any help. RIP Dora and Joan.

to joe,

it sounds like you rats may have died of poisoning or a illnes of some sort. it is unlikly it was a infection due to the fact both rats died. they may have eaten or injested something that may have corsed there deaths.
the only advice for the future is if you see any signs of illness in your rats contact a vet imediatly.
even if its just for some advise over the phone its better to be safe than sorry.
I'm sure you did you best for your rats please don't blame yourself thease things unfortunatly happen.
hope I have been some assistance
sorry for your loss,

To Tara,

I had a female rat with the same problem, bleeding from the vaginal area. I can just suggest that you take her to a vet ASAP because as it turned out my rat had a kidney stone that was to big for her to pass it got infected (hense the bleeding) and she ultimately died.

My daughter is at camp, and her two year old male rats are being house sat by her dear friend. One of the rats (who often has 'red' tears), seems to have a bloody discharge coming out of his ears. I think that it is likely the same as the tears , but don't want to ingnore a serious problem. Help! Do I need to take him to the vet?

to colleen,
it does'nt sound serious. but i would recomend consulting a vet as it could be a underlying infection.
it always best to be safe then sorry.

I have been considering getting my hairless rat, Higgins, neutered. Can anyone inform me of how safe the procedure is? I have bred mice, and know that neutering them is VERY dangerous. Does the same go for rats?

to alex,
It can also be dangerous to neuter a rat the same as most small animals. if you are keping him alone or with a same sexed rat personaly i wouldent bother to procede with the op.
