My rat has a red circle around its eye it seems to get better than worse, and now the eye looks a little foggy. I am going to find a local vet but in the mean time what can I do? I am not sure if it is an infection or if the other rat that is in there is hurting him, which I don't think is the case. Is there any home remedy that I can do to help him until I can get him to a vet?

I know what the problem is!!!!Well, sort of.I dont know what causes it or what its called, but I know how to treat it.What I do know is this, part of it I believe, is dryness around the eye,and thus, spreading antibiotic cream,or jelly on the eyelid and around the eye, can help redehydrate it. I know that part of it is infection, thus the antibiotic.Just make sure that the cream does Not smell at all of anything, and it friendly to animals.
I hope that helps.
It might not because cases in my rats have only gotten so far.Your other rat is definetly not hurting him.

My rat is bald on his shoulders. It looks like barbering, except I dont know if he can reach there. The people who had him before me,didn't clean his cage normally, and as far as I know, probably didn't feed him right either.Could it be malnutrition?he scratches it sometimes, and when he does I stop him.

                     Hoping for some info,

is polysporin okay to put onto my rats scabs? he has spots just like the picture at the top there, the little red spots? and i was hoping i could use polysporin on it instead of taking him straight to the vet? i checked the tube and it doesn't say that it's toxic or anything, so i was just curious, i guess..

Everytime my rat walks past the bars I see hair as if he's losing his hair I'm not sure what to do. Do I need to take him to the vet? If so my parents don't want to bring him to the vet and "waste money" as they say. Please help me out! He needs me.

I have 3 pet rats, one of which this morning I noticed one of it's eyes bulging outward more so than the other and cloudy looking. I have no clue as to what could be the problem. The overall general health of the rat is fine and it is as active as usual. If anyone could possibly help give me ideas of what could be wrong I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

hi. im rubie. my rat that i have now is named sugar,, and she will be 2 this year. shes hairless and so sweet but i'm really worried about her because since she's hairless, her skin problem couldd be different. What is happening to her is that she is getting this HUGE red scab or rush burn or something on her hip, and she is constantly nipping at it (to itch it i think) and scratching it. She grooms constantly now, and I honestly have no idea whats up. I've tried scentless Cetaphil lotion for it, and vitamin E oil.. she just simply licks it away. What should I do? I dont think its real serious, i just think it burns her skin and hurts her, and especially annoys her.

Hello,

My partner and I recently bought two 10 week old Dumbo rats. One of them is completely fine, with no problems.

The other rat seems to be scratching alot. He has very small scabs where he has been scatching. I have been told that mites are a red or orange color and cannot see any on him, at all. Both my partner and I have never owned rats and arent too good with identifying their problems. What do you think this most likely is? He also sneezes quite alot.

Thanks! Meredith

Hi,

Ive had rats for the past 4 years now and you would think i would know whats going on with one of my rats but i dont, well i think i do. I have 5 rats, the newest addition was my younger brothers rat ,remmy, my step-mom wanted me to take her because my younger brother was not taking care of her.
Now, after a week or so after i introduced her to my other 4 rats i noticed that they were all itching more, especially remmy, who i noticed has thinning hair in some areas and on her upper arms has red scabs or sores as if shes been chewing on them.

I gave her and another one of my rats, riddick a bath with sensative skin shampoo for dogs made from oatmeal and what not (since it has seemed to help in the past) and i noticed, when remmy got wet, you could see that nearly her whole back end had thinning hair, it was all a lot thinner then the rest of her hair, from about the mid point on her back all the way down to the base of her tail.
Riddick wasnt that bad, she only has a few thining spots. Anywho, i suspect mites (assuming that my lil bro didnt clean remmys cage very often, well i know he didnt so im sure she aquired some mites) so im going to try this horse stuff...ivermectin...now you say to dilute it with veggie oil..but how would you go about doing that...and i read on another site that you can just take a very small amount (bout the size of a piece of rice) and try to get my rat to injest it by mixing it with applesauce of somthing. Just wondering if that would be fine...sorry this is so long...and would bleaching the cage be fine for getting rid of the mites?
